De Jon Watson elected as Nationals’ head of player development

Last week, while discussing player development changes at a general manager’s meeting in Carlsbad, California, Rizzo expressed the need to offer outside perspectives. That’s how he explained the layoffs of four minor league coaches in mid-September, three of whom were longtime employees. Watson, however, will only check this box as someone from another part of the organization. He won’t meet Rizzo’s stated goal of adding a new set of wards to the mix.
