Filmmaker and creator HBO Max‘S People of Peace TV series James Gunn recently admitted that DC isn’t happy with the use of the P word for Batman.

As a writer and director for both Marvel and DCGunn has been known to push boundaries with his characters. In the past, he’s said that both Warner Bros’ and Marvel Studios have given him surprising freedom when it comes to adapting their characters, but even Gunn couldn’t help but mock Batman. in HBO Max‘S People of Peace not hurt.

Gunn recently appeared on the Hollywood Reporter podcast Top 5 TVs, where he talks to hosts Daniel Feinberg and Lesley Goldberg about the recent hit series. “I’m surprised they don’t so much like Peacemaker calling Batman p — y. I like,” But he says all the other terrible things about all the other superheroes are so much worse than that. call Batman p — y,'” Gunn said when asked about how tall he is can go far with above People of Peace. “I don’t know why he calls Batman p—y is potentially more offensive than he says Superman [has a poop fetish]. I don’t understand why one is raised and the other is not. “

This isn’t the first time DC has been shown to be linguistically sensitive regarding The Dark Knight. Back in June, Justin Halpern, co-creator of HBO Max cartoon series Harley Quinn, went viral when he revealed that DC had asked him to delete a dialogue that implied that Batman performed oral sex on Catwoman. To Halpern’s surprise, the story took the internet by storm, garnering reactions from fans as well as celebrities. Even before has been mounted Alliance justice Filmmaker Zack Snyder joined in when he tweeted an image depicting Batman doing the action on Catwoman.

Like Gunn said, the creation of controversy seemed arbitrary. It is clear that while DC is willing to allow creators like Gunn to freely control some of their lesser known characters (such as Polka-Dot Man in Suicide Squad), they’re a bit more protective of legacy characters like Batman.

Maybe it’s something about the word P – sy, since it’s a shared element in both of these stories. Either way, it’s definitely been an odd time for the DCEU. It’s hard to imagine twenty years ago, any writer or director would have fought for the right to mock Batman, or hint at his sex life, but here we are.

The first three episodes of People of Peace Now available to stream on HBO Max, with new episodes airing every Thursday.
