Days Gone director commented on sales compared to Ghost of Tsushima

Days Gone also sold well, according to the game’s director, as Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima sold more than 8 million copies.
During the PS4 generation, Sony released many big-budget titles to critical and commercial success. This includes games in franchise established as God of War and Our Last One, in addition to new IPs like Horizon Zero Dawn and Ghost of Tsushima. Sony seems to have decided to double down on single-player games, and almost every big-budget title they publish has been a hit in some form.
However, Day by day is generally considered an exception to this rule. After release, Day by day was met with mid-range reviews, especially when compared to the standard set by other Sony first-party studios. While some fans might have expected it to get a sequel on PS5, it was announced last year that Days Gone 2 The pitch was rejected by Sony. Yesterday, Sucker Punch Productions announced that Ghost of Tsushima has sold over 8 million copies, and Jeff Ross, director of Day by day, want to share a few words with game fans.
Ross says he’s leaving Sony at the end of 2020 and Day by day also sold over 8 million copies at the time. Since then, it has sold more copies organically, with well-received PC ports accounting for more than a million units. Ross says the local studio manager made Bend Studio feel like Day by day was a disappointment, despite the impressive sales numbers. In a follow-up Tweet, Ross thanked everyone for their messages and complimented the fans Day by day for their continued support.
Selling over 8 million copies is a huge achievement for any game, let alone a new IP, so it’s odd that Day by day is generally considered an exception in Sony’s impressive AAA portfolio. Despite the strong sales increase, critical reception seems to play a big part in Sony’s decision making. In addition to good reviews, most of Sony’s big budget titles have won or been nominated for multiple year-end awards. Day by day really an outlier in this scenario, but perhaps Bend Studio should have taken another hit in this franchise.
It’s still surprising looking back at how Sony’s early party games have blown up in the PS4 generation. For example, it was confirmed that 2018 God of War has sold 19.5 million copies as of August 2021, a staggering number for any exclusive game. This number will surely increase when God of War launching on PC later this month.
Day by day Now available on PC and PS4.
