David Letterman Bashes Donald Trump at the First Biden-Era Kennedy Honor Center

For the first time in four years, the country’s incumbent president attended the Kennedy Center Honors Ceremony. This year’s recipients include opera singers Justino Diaz, Founder of Motown Records Berry Gordy, Grammy Award Winner Joni Mitchell, Saturday night live producer Lorne Michaels, and Oscar nominations Bette Midler. “This night is about honorees, whose unique gifts transcend boundaries and represent all sides — left to left,” quipped Letterman.

Other than Letterman’s opening joke, the evening’s guests refrained from grilling Trump, who set the precedent for skipping the Kennedy Center Honors in 2017 after being honored. Norman Lear and Carmen de Lavallade said they would attend the gala but skipped the accompanying White House reception. The Trump White House later confirmed that the then president and Melania will skip the ceremony to avoid “any political distraction.”

However, Biden ended up receiving a few exploits during the honors SNLby Michaels. Jimmy Fallon joked that it was “a little scary to make jokes in front of the most powerful man in the world — and President Biden.” Meanwhile, the current cast Michael Che “It’s kind of scary to make a joke in front of President Joe Biden,” said, “Come on, there’s no way he’s still sober right now.”
