However, Kruger told the House of Commons that he “probably disagrees” with other MPs about the decision.

While other MPs tried to challenge him, Kruger continued: “I would offer to those Members trying to calm me down that this is an appropriate topic for a political debate and my point to the front bench is that I don’t understand , why are we lecturing the United States to a verdict to return decision-making authority over this policy issue to the states, to democratic decision-makers, rather than leaving it in the hands of the courts.”

Kruger was one of 61 Conservative MPs who voted against extending access to abortion in Northern Ireland in June’s vote.

She wrote: “Of course I lived with the constant fear of pregnancy. The only birth control available was the condom, and that meant relying on Guy.

“When I was a few days late, I panicked. Guy took me to a friend of a friend of the café owner’s on the corner, a small, quiet woman upstairs in a quiet, dark house.

“I was afraid she would stick knitting needles in me and give me peritonitis, but I was even more afraid of my parents.

“My father’s dictum that women who ‘did it’ before marriage were sluts tormented me. Oddly enough, it never occurred to me to consider the moral issue of abortion.

“Luckily there weren’t any knitting needles. The woman gave me an injection, God knows what, and took a fortnight’s pocket money from me.

“And absolutely nothing happened, except that as the days went by I became increasingly nauseous with anxiety. And then, fourteen days later, hey presto – not for the first time the “curse” came as a blessing.”
