CNN’s Dana Bash asked general surgeon Dr. Vivek Murthy on Sunday if he thinks Fox News is “killing people” with covid-19 misinformation.
Murthy and other top officials have been very vocal about the spread of such misinformation on Facebook, and the President Joe Biden he himself even said that social platforms like Facebook are “Killing.”
Bash asks Murthy about “misinformation being spread on the right”, showing clips of anti-vaccination comments from Laura Ingraham, Tucker Carlsonand Newsmax’s Rob Schmitt.
Some Fox News hosts have encouraged vaccinations and share their own vaccinations. Last week Sean Hannity tell viewers they should talk to their doctor and other health professionals they trust. But hosts like Carlson engaged in irresponsible anti-vaccine comments over the past few months.
Bash asks this question to the general surgeon:
President Biden has accused social media platforms of murder. Do you think conservative media, like Fox News, are doing the same? Are they also killing people with rhetoric like you just heard?
Murthy did not address Fox directly, but said, “I think that all of us, including the media, including individuals, medical professionals, have a responsibility to share health facts such as science dictates, as science has informed us.”
“Unless we are honest about the consequences of communicating with people, unless we are serious about making sure that what we communicate is actually rooted in science and not from a important issues like vaccines, we end up putting everyone at risk. And that’s my big worry, Dana,” he added.
