A new season of Probationer is out, and backbiting is more intense than ever. Old alliances are being broken down as increasingly bizarre antics in the quest to rise to the top of the economy come to light.
In case you missed this week’s drama, here’s a quick recap: Representative Republican. Dan Crenshaw called the Freedom Caucus (whose members include Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, Paul Gosar and Matt Gaetz)”Grifters” and “performance artists”. “Radio presenter Dan Bongino returned fire, called Crenshaw a “false prophet”. Arizona Representative Wendy Rogers tweeted that Crenshaw “must go with .” [Nancy] Mace and Ronna Romney [McDaniel]!!! Goodbye!”
This is something that might make Omarosa blush, but we’re just getting started. Fan favorite and QAnon-friendly attorney Lin Wood also continues attack Tucker Carlson and Dan Bongino, while taking more pictures at Sean Hannity, Charlie Kirk and Seb Gorka. Wood also said he had “severed my relationship with General.” [Mike] Flynn,” call most of what constitutes Conservative Inc. “real Deep State media” and said “they’re all in it together.”
All of this follows a triangle of hatred among the Republican Deputies. Boebert, Greene and Mace. And when Donald Trump incited GOP internal dissent in Georgia.
The action of the Republican Party on the Republican Party continues to play out within the party that (incredibly) is poised to take control of Congress next year. And, thanks to Trump, even ostensibly virtuous fighters like Mace resort to offensive comedy (like calling Greene foolhardy and say “bless her damned heart”) to avoid being in the way.
But what does this say about the GOP’s decaying culture? The terms of the debate were decided, and they were crudely decided. The contestants may be smart, but this is a crate of crabs, not a crate of laughter.
Staying with seafood, the obvious explanation for why this is happening is a fish that is rotting from the head down. During the Republican caucus in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Kevin McCarthy reportedly urged Republicans not to attack each other. But let’s be honest: McCarthy has less statutory authority and even less moral authority to police his own caucus members. He is merely one of the contestants of this psychological game, scrambling for time, building alliances, and surviving.
Problem? The “winner” gets what’s the equivalent of an internship with Trump. Imagine selling your soul and climbing a greasy pole, only to realize that when you reach the top you are still at the bottom. Anyone want to guess what the second place is?
Donald Trump is the de facto leader of the Republican Party. And like many bad bosses, he fosters a chaotic environment where everyone is constantly looking over their shoulder. In his eyes, the only way to rise is to tear each other apart. Trump takes pleasure in watching members of his “team” be publicly humiliated by their colleagues. He fosters this kind of culture.
In a rational world, Trumpy Republicans would realize that playing Trump’s game is pointless. You will never be right wing/crazy/loyal enough to Trump and his MAGA minions. Even if you cut back temporarily, it just means you’re allowed to keep singing for your dinner. There is no scenario where, after paying the dues, you can call the shots. No, you will forever work for him. Of course, that’s assuming you weren’t taken down by the “friendly fire”.
Current opponents on this sick reality show will not heed this warning. They will continue to play the game until the ratings collapse and the show is cancelled. And that could take decades, especially when Democrats invite teams to shoot their own circles.
Making matters worse, not everyone on the right is LARPing. Some percent of people who play this game don’t even know they are contestants. Lin Wood might fit into this category (or else he’s a hell of a actor). Once your “side” picks up on conspiracy theories, don’t be surprised that even some of the “leaders” believe them (and start to think that maybe you’re a leftist). There’s a good chance that no matter how radical you are, it won’t be enough to appease those trying to oppose Trump. The revolution destroys itself.
Trump’s Fantasy Island: Apprentice Version looks more like Survivor Daily. I wonder who will be voting next?
