‘Dallas Buyers Club’ director Jean-Marc Vallée dies aged 58

Jean-Marc Vallee, famous filmmaker best known for his many Oscar winning films Dallas Buyers Club and get HBO miniseries Big Little Lies and Sharp subject, passed away at the age of 58. Theo Limit line, Vallée died at his cabin outside Quebec City this week. His cause of death has yet to be revealed, but it is noted that his passing comes as a complete shock to his friends and family.

Born in Montreal, Vallée made his directorial debut in 1995 Black list before going on to direct the next three films in his native Canada. His big break in Hollywood came in 2009 The Young Victoria, starring Emily Blunt as the monarch of the same name, who won the Best Dressed award at the Academy Awards. More praise followed with 2013 Dallas Buyers Club, a Matthew McConaughey car about the AIDs crisis of the 1980s, won three Academy Awards, including Best Actor. Year 2014 Wild also received similar Oscars for stars Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern.

In the second half of the last decade, Vallée successfully transitioned her cinema to the small screen with the beloved Emmy Award. Big Little Lies, Yes WildWitherspoon and Dern with Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep. Vallée directed the show’s first season in 2017 before handing the baton to Andrea Arnold for the second season, though he continues as executive producer. Vallée hits gold again with 2018 Sharp subject, horror series Amy Adams. Now it is his last directing effort.

Vallée’s producing partner, Nathan Ross, said the following in a statement to Deadline:

“Jean-Marc stands for creativity, authenticity, and trying things out differently,” says Ross. “He is a true artist and a generous, loving young man. Everyone who worked with him couldn’t help but see the talent and vision he possessed. He is a friend, a creative partner and a brother to me. The conductor will be greatly missed but it’s comforting to know his stunning style and impactful work he shared with the world will live on.”

HBO released their own statement, in which they hailed Vallée as a “truly extraordinary talent” and “a man of great interest”.

“Jean-Marc Vallée is a brilliant filmmaker, fiercely committed, a truly extraordinary talent, who infuses each scene with a profoundly introspective and emotional truth,” said HBO. “He is also a man who is extremely caring and fully invested in himself alongside every actor he directs. We were shocked to learn of his sudden death, and we extend our sincerest condolences to his sons, Alex and Émile, his extended family, and longtime production partner his year, Nathan Ross. ”

Jean-Marc Vallée is survived by his two sons, Alex and Émile, as well as his three siblings, Marie-Josée Vallée, Stéphane Tousicy and Gérald Vallée.
