Dad rages at plea for ex-Rutgers athlete Logan Kelley who killed his daughter

The parents of a 19-year-old nightclub worker whose throat was slashed by a former Rutgers basketball player are furious that he has been sentenced to just 22 years in prison in Tijuana, Mexico.

Logan Kelley, 27, admitted to murdering Isis Atalia Montoya Romero at the Adelita nightclub in February 2021 when he mistook the 19-year-old mother, who worked there, for someone else. CCTV footage from multiple angles shows Kelley following Montoya Romero with a 4-inch military-style knife and slitting her throat before running away. She had previously been spotted walking with a customer at the club.

According to local media reports, Kelley did not appear to know his victim but had instead planned to hurt another woman he met at the club, which is described as a “traditional men’s club” featuring dancing and prostitution.

Security personnel were able to stop Kelley and initially identified him as a military man based on the type of weapon he was using. He never served. He only played three games for Rutgers University before being released from the team for unknown reasons.

Kelley’s light sentence was part of a plea deal that included a payment of about $40,000 to the victim’s family, including their 4-year-old son. Femicide charges against the basketball player, which would have carried a minimum sentence of 40 years, were dropped as part of the deal.

The victim’s father was furious at the verdict. “The judge, the prosecutor and even my daughter’s attorney all acted in favor of[Kelley]and not for her. I’m very frustrated with all the corruption and deception,” José Montoya told New Jersey Advanced Media. “There is a video of what this assassin did to my daughter. He practically beheaded her! It seems the judge didn’t even see the video.”
