Cyrus Mistry, prominent Indian business leader, dies in road accident aged 54 – National

Cyrus Mistry, an Indian-born Irish businessman and former chairman of Indian conglomerate Tata Sons, died in a crash on Sunday after his car crashed into a roadside kerb in western India, police said. He was 54.

The crash happened on a river bridge in Palghar district of Maharashtra state near Mumbai, police officer Prakash Gaekwad told reporters.

Mistry was chairman of Tata Sons for five years until he was removed by the board in October 2016. He challenged the board’s decision, but India’s top court upheld his dismissal.

Politicians and business leaders were shocked to learn of Mistry’s death.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Mistry is a promising business leader who believes in India’s economic capacity. “His death is a great loss to the world of commerce and industry,” he said.
