Cyberpunk ‘Zorro’ Reboot Brings Out a Writer and Director


It’s been sixteen years since we last saw Zorro in live-action, when Martin Campbell reunited with Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones to provide a spin-off sequel to the exciting 1998 swashbuckler.
That’s not for lack of trying, though, with countless reinventions of the iconic character already touted in the interim. Gael García Bernal Once Tied Into Jonás Cuarón’s Near Future Title Z, when Robert Rodriguez and Sofa Vergara are developing a series of series for NBC.
However, Deadline announced that a feature film is rebooting, with Alex Rivera set to write and direct Zorro 2.0. The syndicated log line is unlikely to generate much enthusiasm from the fan base, after it was revealed that the headline hero would be the young, undocumented hacker Oscar de la Vega, who in charge… z0rr0.

Caught in a plot that threatens both his family and the world at large, the masked man is also forced to deal with a shady government unit that attacked his mother in a story that set to combine border control and surveillance to reflect the times we live in. .
Zorro 2.0 set to re-imagine that classic as a high-concept and sociopolitically ancient cyberpunk action thriller with sci-fi elements, it’s an interesting approach to say that at least, but we’re curious to see how it all plays out.
