UK citizens going abroad can use the NHS app as a vaccine certificate when traveling to required countries proof of Covid-19 vaccination for entry.

But how do you get a Covid vaccine card, and what do you do without a smartphone?

How to download the NHS app for travel

Owned and operated by the NHS, the app is free and available for download by anyone aged 13 or over registered with a GP in the UK.

You can download it through Apple App Store and Google Play app market. You can also access NHS App services from your desktop or laptop browser by going to

You will need an NHS login to use this service. If you don’t have you can set up one for free here.

You will be asked about NHS number to create an account.

Being able to show proof that you have had your vaccinations will allow you to enter some countries, but you will still need to follow government travel rules when leaving and returning to the UK. .

The official guidance states: ‘Providing your Covid-19 vaccination status allows you to show others that you have had the full dose of Covid-19 vaccine while traveling abroad to certain countries or territory. A full course is currently two doses of any approved vaccine.

‘You can access your Covid-19 vaccination status through the free NHS App from 17 May. You can access the app through mobile devices such as smartphones or computers. board. ‘

You should register with the app before booking any travel.

However, the NHS has said that the app does not work on some older smartphones.

An NHS statement read: ‘Older Apple models (iPhone 5S and iPhone 6/6Plus and below) and Android phones that do not support iOS 13.5 or Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) or later will not be able to use the app.

How to get a Covid vaccination card if you don’t have a smartphone

No smartphone? It’s okay – you can still go on your dream vacation.

If you’ve had both of your vaccines in the UK, you can apply to receive an NHS Covid pass, proving your immunization status.

You can use the letter for both travel and domestic purposes.

There are separate order forms for Wales and Scotland. Northern Ireland has yet to put the plan on paper.

Make sure you register the letter ahead of time, as it can take five business days to arrive at the address registered with your GP.

How to use the NHS Covid card to travel

To use the app, you just need to present your unique QR code to the officials when required.

Your vaccine status will automatically be added to your account when you log in – you won’t have to enter your vaccine details manually.

To do this you need to open the app, select ‘Get your NHS COVID card’, select ‘continue’, select ‘Travel’ then click ‘show details’ under your name.

Then a QR code will appear on your screen – hold it up to scan.

Alternatively, you can pre-download a PDF copy or choose to receive an offline copy via email.

These options are on the same page as the ‘show details’ option.

You can then show the PDF or offline copy to the official staff to scan.

Same goes for the NHS Covid travel letter. Make sure you bring it to the airport with you to show the officials when required.

It is important to note that many countries also require proof of a negative test to allow entry, so make sure you check the entry requirements of the country you are planning to visit.
