Susie Essman made a name for herself while cursing Larry David as her alter ego Susie Greene Curb your enthusiasm. But as she revealed on this week’s episode of The last laugh audio file, in the 21 years since the show premiered — and the 35 years since she met David in a comedy club in New York — they’ve never once had a real fight.
Essman opens up about David’s unique “genius” as a comedian, how Roadside away from the political fallacy, the unconscious inspiration for her character, and the monstrous world she may have played Elaine in. Seinfeld.
We’re talking the morning after the episode aired, in which Susie is included in embroidering a KKK cape for Larry — with a Klansman-specific surprise in question in the background. “It was a great episode,” she said. “That, for me, is a Roadside. ”
“By the way, what a great episode last night, they just keep getting better,” added Essman. “Episodes seven, eight, nine and 10 are not on the charts.”
She’s all for the “genius” of Larry David and host Jeff Schaffer. “I mean the way these two plotted the plot and put everything together — and they did that all season,” Essman said. “You see, every plot comes together in episode 10. So they do it in one episode and then within a season, it’s unbelievable. I don’t even know how they got there. It’s transcendent for me. ”
Over the course of 21 years and 11 seasons, Susie Greene has called fictional Larry David a “four-eyed bastard” and worse than she can remember. But in real life, she told me, “I don’t think we’ve ever fought.”
“We have a really close relationship,” she said. “We are very close friends and get along very well and understand each other very well. The key to getting along with Larry is having really good boundaries. I understand Larry and Larry understands me. One of the reasons we can talk to each other in such despicable ways is because we know we’re just playing. There’s nothing real about it. ”
