College Basketball Rankings: Duke takes #1 in New Coach Poll ahead of Purdue, Gonzaga and Baylor

Beating the #1 team in college basketball, it turns out, you’ll win the support of coaches around the country. NS Blue Devil Duke did as much on Friday by dispatching the highest ranked people Gonzaga Bulldogs, 84-81, and was rewarded in the ballot box by coaches by replacing Zags at #1 in Monday’s updated Coach Poll, yielding 19 out of 31 votes elected in first place. Duke also came in at number 1 in the AP poll earlier on Monday.
Gonzaga dropped just two places to 3rd after the loss, which was the first game of the season. This is the first time since November 12, 2020, that it hasn’t made it to #1 in the usual Seasonal Coaches Poll rankings. This is the first time Duke has placed number 1 in the poll since November 25, 2019, after it opened the season 6-0.
Duke’s 7-0 start to the season ended with two stunning wins on record. It opened the season with a win over 10th place Kentucky79-71, and the win over Gonzaga is easily the most impressive win by any team in the sport this season (so far). However, the tests will come quickly, with a road trip vs. Ohio State on the third deck as part of the Big Ten / ACC Pre-match Challenge of three matches and pre-tournament tunes.
The rest of this week’s Coach Poll also shows some changes over time, with Purdue up to number 2, Baylor up to number 4 and UCLA down to 5th place. Villanova, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas and Kentucky make up the rest of the top 10 new skins.
