Colin Luther Powell was born in New York’s Harlem neighborhood on April 5, 1937. His mother and father, Luther and the previous Maud Ariel McKoy, had emigrated from Jamaica of their 20s and located work within the garment district. In 1941, the household moved to the South Bronx, the place Colin and his older sister, Marilyn, grew up in a multiethnic group of West Indian, Italian and Jewish immigrants.
