Coco Gauff Out of Tokyo Olympics After Positive COVID Test

Tennis player Coco Gauff became the latest star athlete to leave the Tokyo Olympics, which are set to begin this weekend under unprecedented restrictions for an event designed to bring together a global audience.

On Sunday, Gauff confirmed via social media that she has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus and will therefore skip the competition in Tokyo. The 17-year-old prodigy said to represent her country at Olympic “Always my dream,” and she expressed hope that “there will be many opportunities for me to make this a reality in the future,” she wrote on Twitter.

Having been delayed for a year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the games in Tokyo will begin on Friday and run through August 8. The competitions will take place largely without spectators in case of a turn a two-week celebration of sportsmanship into a global super-viral event.

Other stars in the tennis world – notably Roger Federer, Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal – are also sitting out the 2021 summer games.
