This name change comes amid decades of controversy. Back in 2018, the team took the first step to quell the disagreement by discontinuing Chief Wahoo. The Wahoo leader is a stereotypical depiction of a Native American male, and he was used as the emblem on the team’s uniform through the end of the 2018 season.

Although the logo was removed, the team continued to use the name Cleveland Indians. However, three years later, it decided to change its official name to Cleveland Guardians. The new name refers to Cleveland’s “Transport Guard,” which are the four large sculptures that adorn the city’s Memorial Bridge of Hope.
