Classic NES Games Still Missing on Nintendo Switch Online

The Nintendo Switch has its own dedicated exclusive suite, but has proven to be a great “all-in-one” console for gamers new and old to tap into the company’s rich history. The inclusion of Nintendo Switch Online had an added perk that included legacy content from previous Nintendo consoles. While games from the N64, SNES and even Sega Genesis are all available to play, the first category available is for the Nintendo Entertainment System.

First hitting the market in late 2018, the NES lineup has offered a wide variety of the most iconic classics from Nintendo’s first foray into console gaming. console. From major franchises like The Legend of Zelda to underrated gems like Blaster Master, there is no shortage of services available on the platform. That being said, three years have passed since Nintendo first started adding NES games to the game. Nintendo Switch Online, there are still some puzzling omissions that are not playable on the service.

Opposite

The NES is generally recognized for having a library of extremely difficult games (many more of which are discussed below). One of such titles is Opposite, was first released in 1986, and then ported to the NES the following year. Opposite known for its levels of punitive defiance and dedication to its flamboyant sense of 80’s action movies. Bullets fly, screen paint explosions and every moment is a battle to the finish line. Opposite also known for being one of the earliest Konami titles to feature the legendary Konami Code, which grants the player 30 extra lives, something vital to survival in this game.


Mega Man Series

Mega Man also landed on the NES in 1987 and immediately great success for Capcom. The close combination of shooting and platforming spawned five sequels on the NES alone and continued to grow into a massive franchise. These original titles were loved and praised for playing an important role in refining the design of action discs, something that modern series such as Ratchet and Clank owe a lot of credit for. If including all six games is an over-order, then at least the first three games for posterity’s sake would be a worthy addition to Switch Online.

Batman

Licensed video games are often something gamers actively avoid, as they are often lazy, rushing products to coincide with the release of the movie or show. This is no different in the NES era, with countless games tied to lousy movies popping up on consoles during its existence. Batman is an exception to this rule, capturing the moody atmosphere of Michael Keaton filmed it and adapted it into pure 8-bit glory. The action platformer has a good level of challenge and variety, making good use of Batman’s gadgets to stop the Joker and his evil plans.

Aside from first-party Nintendo titles, Konami is said to have the second most influential lineup on the NES. With Opposite above, the company has become a well-known name in the industry, but Castlevania strengthen its legacy further. The three whips break adventure is extremely difficult like many of the other games on this list, but it is very satisfying to play all the games equally. Everything from the gameplay mechanics, to the level design, and to the music has become iconic in game culture. Considering the importance of these games on the NES, there seems to be a hole in the Online conversion they are not there.


Battletoads


Along with drones, beat ’em up is probably the most popular genre on the NES. Many titles like Double Dragon and River City Ransom proved to be successful, but Battletoads bring something special desktop. Its raw sense of humor and animation on top moves are a sight to behold. Of course, it’s also brutally difficult, almost unforgivable in that respect, with the Turbo Tunnel level living up to its notoriety among gamers. It’s not on the Switch which could be a rights issue, as the game is now owned by Microsoft.
