Citadel Coach Duggar Baucom was hospitalized Monday after collapsing on the field shortly after his team’s game against No. 5 Duke was played in Durham, North Carolina. He was held overnight at Duke University Hospital for further evaluation and released to return home to Charleston on Tuesday afternoon, the team said in a statement.

Baucom, 61, collapsed in the middle of the scorer’s table and was on the bench just 63 seconds into the first half shortly after The Citadel scored their first goal of the night. Paramedics helped him off the field after he received attention from the sidelines and he received further medical assistance at Cameron Indoor Stadium before being taken to hospital.

Baucom’s wife, Amber, said Natalie Spala of ABC News 4 Baucom did not go home with the team on Tuesday as expected because he is still in the hospital, but they hope he will be released soon.

The match was delayed on Monday night due to Baucom receiving a rating after his collapse. He walked out of the courthouse with wobbly legs with his arms wrapped around the paramedic. Deputy head coach Jack Castleberry took over in his absence.

Shortly after Duke’s 107-81 win over The Citadel, Castleberry released an update on Baucom.

“He’s as good as he can be,” Castleberry said in his post-match press conference, adding that he was in great pain. “He’s in good spirits.”

The Citadel set a new record with 18 3-pointers in a losing attempt, the most ever by an opponent inside Cameron Indoor Stadium. Its 81 points are the most Duke has scored at home against an unpopular opponent since Illinois scored 83 points a season ago.

Baucom has been The Citadel’s coach since 2015, scoring 67-119. He is having his first winning season with the school and has led the team to a 3-1 start to the 2021-22 season.
