Gilliard’s mother and father prioritized schooling, and Chris grew to become a voracious reader. He went on to acquire a PhD in rhetoric and composition from Purdue College, and nowadays he teaches English at Macomb Group School in Shelby Township, Mich. In telephone conversations and Zoom calls, he’s affable and self-deprecating, recounting examples of ignorance or injustice with sardonic humor. He peppers his discussions with references to different lecturers’ work; when requested about his personal influence, he deflects credit score to those that have influenced him, together with College of Texas professor Simone Browne, UCLA’s Noble, Detroit poet and activist Tawana Petty and Northeastern College’s Woodrow Hartzog.
