Chocobo MP microtransactions spark controversy with Square Enix fans

Final Fantasy fans enjoy mobile gacha-like microtransactions in Chocobo GP, a full $50 from Square Enix. Chocobo GP was supposed to be an odd successor to the classic Chocobo Racing on the Nintendo Switch, but the free-to-play game didn’t immediately appear until fans started playing the game. The backlash against has been huge and not pleasant for Square Enix.
Chocobo GP microtransactions go far with $50 game
After racing for a short while, the player is unexpectedly met with Gil, the ticket, and Mythril, the in-game currency that you can only get by spending real money. Buying a first season ticket is basically free as it costs 800 Mythril and the game gives you 800 Mythril for logging into season one. However, 800 Mythril will actually expire if they are inactive for five months. Not even much regularly Gacha mobile game does just that.

And looking at various subreddits like r/TwoBestFriendsPlay and r/FinalFosystem, it’s clear that fans not only feel cheated, but also feel that Square Enix’s reputation has been tarnished.
This is just a sample of comments from Reddit:
“It’s possibly the most sleazy gacha tactic I’ve seen so far.”
“The game should have been F2P instead of a fake Lite version with how many mtx this game has.”
“Justifiably, no opinion on all this microtransaction crap, launch the game, be greeted immediately with the ingame currency you buy with mtx, get through the battle. for rewards with two levels and the whole design makes it feel like my nintendo switch is a phone. Like am I paying a $50 game or an f2p mobile game? ”
After the controversies about Marvel’s Avengers live service and the fall of Babylon went viral, it seems Square Enix’s microtransactions are hitting the proverbial wall. Worse still, most reviewers for Chocobo GP were unaware of these microtransactions until after release of the game.
In other news, an Elden Ring fan created an app to track quests and NPCs, and Square Enix revealed the PlayStation exclusive title Valkyrie Elysium.
