CHICAGO (CBS) — On the anniversary of civil proper icon Emmett Until’s birthday, his childhood house in Chicago’s West Woodlawn neighborhood will get a historic landmark plaque Sunday.
Until was simply 14 years previous when he was kidnapped, crushed and lynched for being accused of whistling at a white lady whereas visiting Mississippi in 1955 as a Black man.

It was the times and years that will observe that served as a catalyst within the civil rights motion.
Earlier this 12 months the house he grew up in officially became a city landmark.
The murdered teenager is buried alongside his mom Mamie Until and her husband Gene Mobley.
Earlier this 12 months congressmen launched laws to award Emmett Until and his mom with the Congressional Gold Medal and honor Mamie Until-Mobley with a commemorative postage stamp.
