Chicago Cubs front office covering themselves in trade talks

The Chicago Cubs Entering the season with three key players about to reach freedom. Although it is highly unlikely that Kris Bryant will agree to a long-term extension, there is optimism that both Anthony Rizzo and Javier Baez will remain part of the franchise. Both players have spoken of their desire to stay in Chicago; it’s just a matter of the cubs stepping on the plate.

Now that the Cubs are up for sale, they are also open to discussing extensions. They are yet to shop Baez or Rizzo as they hope to buy both long before the deal deadline.

Chicago Cubs are waiting until the last minute to discuss extensions

On the surface, it makes sense to wait. The Cubs seem to want Rizzo and Baez as part of their future, especially since they’ve pointed out that this isn’t a real rebuild. Keeping them both above the fold will speed up their time to compete again.

But their interest in potentially scaling both players covers the Cubs main office. While Bryant may be a star and someone the fan base appreciates, he’s not expected to be a long-term member of the franchise. Baez and Rizzo had that feeling, and were loved on another level for it.

This is something that the front office must also be aware of. Trading Baez and/or Rizzo, while not out of the question, would be a hugely unpopular move. By stating that they are interested in renewing both players before a potential move is made, they can say that they cannot agree to terms.

The sincerity of their desire to keep both players is unquestionable. There are just two weeks left until the closing date, which means that those negotiations will have to come to fruition quickly. With the main office involved in commercial discussions, it’s fair to wonder what the priority of these extensions really is.

The Chicago Cubs announced that they want to renew Javier Baez and Anthony Rizzo. The timing of these claims seems to be just a cover.
