Charger Pro Bowl pass rusher Joey Bosa and defense Jerry Tillery was placed on the team’s COVID-19/substitute list on Tuesday, leaving the status of both players for Sunday night’s home game against Steelsmith suspect.
Vaccinated players can return to the team if they can submit two negative COVID-19 tests at least 24 hours apart. Unvaccinated players must isolate for a period of 10 days and will then be allowed to return to the team if there are no symptoms.
A three-time Bowler, Bosa has had 5.5 sacks and three rams in nine games this season. If Bosa can’t play, he’ll probably be replaced by rookies Chris Rumph II, who has six tackles in nine games this season. Picking in the fourth round in last year’s draft, Rumph scored eight bags and 11.5 tackles to lose in his final season at Duke.
Tillery, a three-year veteran, has scored 2.5 tackles and 30 tackles this season. His backup on the Charger depth chart is Joe Gaziano, a two-year veteran who has made four tackles this season.
Sunday night’s Chargers rival is also addressing issues related to COVID-19. Midfielder Ben Roethlisberger remains on the team’s COVID-19 list after testing positive for the virus last Saturday. He was replaced by Mason Rudolph in Pittsburgh’s game against Detroit last Sunday. Free safety Minkah Fitzpatrick joined Roethlisberger on the COVID-19 roster after testing positive for the virus after Sunday’s game.
The Steelers are also dealing with an injury to the outside guard TJ Watt and hidden corners Joe Haden. Watt suffered hip and knee injuries on Sunday, while Haden is considered day after day with a foot injury.
Sunday night’s game was a rotating contest for both teams. The Steelers are now halfway through the game Ravens won first place in AFC North. The charger is the back half game of Chief won first place in the AFC West race.
