Casper Ruud: First Norwegian to reach a Grand Slam semifinal

French Open sensation Casper Ruud has become the first Norwegian to reach the semifinals of a Grand Slam as he prepares to face Marin Cilic at Roland-Garros.

Ruud stormed through the French Open 2022 tournament to face Marin Cilic in the semifinals tomorrow (Friday 3 June 2022).

The 23-year-old met Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the first round and beat the former fifth in the world rankings 6: 7 (6: 8), 7: 6 (7: 4), 6: 2, 7: 6 ( 7-0). ) before taking on Emil Ruusuvuori, Lorenzo Sonago, current world No. 12 Hubert Hurkacz and finally rising teenage star Holger Rune in the quarter-finals.

Who is Casper Ruud?

Born in Oslo in 1998, Ruud is the son of former tennis player Christian Ruud, who is also his current coach.

As a junior, Ruud reached the third round of the 2015 French Open boys’ singles and the 2015 US Open boys’ singles.

In 2016 he was ranked as the world’s number one junior player, becoming the first Norwegian to have such a ranking. In the same year he played his first Futures tournament and his first ATP Challenger tournament.

The year ended with Ruud ranked 225th in the ATP rankings after receiving a wildcard for the 2016 Chengdu Open, his first tournament of the ATP World Tour 250 series.

Ruud’s first Grand Slam came at the 2018 Australian Open after battling through the qualifying stage.

Ruud made it to the actual tournament of the Australian Open and became the first Norwegian to qualify for a Grand Slam main draw in 17 years.

He has since reached the fourth round of the Australian Open (2021); the third round of the US Open (2019) and the first round of Wimbledon (2021) before reaching his historic Roland-Garros semi-final

Ruud’s first ATP title came at the 2020 Argentina Open after defeating Pedro Sousa in the final, becoming the first tennis player from Norway to win an ATP Tour title and also to appear in more than one ATP Tour Finals.

He also surpassed his father’s place at number 39 in the ATP rankings and reached a new career high at number 34.

Ruud was unable to compete in the Australian Open due to injury, but his return at the Argentina Open saw him claim his seventh ATP singles title.

After Ruud’s final match at the 2022 Miami Open, where he lost to Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz, the young Norwegian set a career-high seventh place finish.

He then defended his title at the Geneva Open 2022, beating Joao Sousa in the final and playing the longest league game of the season in both time (3 hours 4 minutes) and games (36).

When is the French Open semifinals?

Casper Ruud will play his first ever Grand Slam semi-final tomorrow Friday 3 June 2022 at 4:30pm BST.

If Ruud wins his match against Croatian Marin Cilic, Ruud will meet either German Alexander Zverev or 21st Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal.
