CARTA to invest additional funds in increasing its electric buses fleet

Charleston, South Carolina – The city’s electric bus fleet is becoming a reality as CARTA plans to invest in additional electric buses next year.

According to CARTA chairman Mike Sikings, CARTA’s budget for 2022 will increase by $ 2 million compared to 2021, which now stands at $ 12.8 million from Charleston County.

Currently, CARTA has only 6 electric buses. However, with additional funding provided by Charleston County in conjunction with federal funding, Seekings expects the electric bus fleet to reach 33 buses by the end of 2022.

“Every day as this region grows, we need to give people a chance on how to turn around,” Seekings said.

“Public transport is a lifeline for those who depend on transit. We want to make sure that we serve that segment of the population. And then give people the opportunity to be positive. ”

Meanwhile, CARTA is working on a battery charging project to find the best places to charge.

The search says half of the sales tax was passed by Charleston County voters, allowing them to fund the necessary changes.

Each bus is expected to cost about $ 700,000.

CARTA officials will travel to the Charleston County Finance Committee on Thursday. | CARTA to invest additional funds in increasing its electric buses fleet
