Carrying case for an Xbox cross platform fighting game

The fighting game genre is known for its unique subsets, ranging from traditional 2D fighters like Mortal Kombat 3D services like Soulcalibur. While their formats may vary, they all speak to the same allure of beating your friends or AI opponents with a colorful cast of characters. Out of all the fighting subgroups, however, platform fighters tend to get a lot of attention whenever a new one is announced. Many of the biggest gaming companies have entered the genre with their own platform fighters, most notably Nintendo’s. Super Smash Bros., but curious enough Xbox is a name that is still absent.

VIDEO GAME OF THE DAY

Platform fighters tend to excel because of one key aspect: crossover potential. Nintendo popularized this idea by combining all its features with Super Smash Bros.and in the PS3 days, PlayStation got in on the action with PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. While the former remains dominant and the latter fades, Xbox has never launched a major cross-platform fighter of its own. With Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl and recently announced MultiVersus is finding its way through the genre, now seems like the perfect time for Xbox to use its resources and get a platform fighter of its own.

Potential lineup of an Xbox platform fighting game

bethesda studios and games

Nintendo was able to build a huge roster of characters from its exclusive properties and collaborative IPs for Super Smash Bros.and while it can be difficult to reach the same heights, Xbox has enough exclusivity to build a comparable lineup. Some obvious choices would be HaloMaster Chief and Gears of Wars‘Marcus Fenix, but the game’s roster may even include attributes that haven’t seen a new game in a number of years. Characters like Conker can find new life in a platform fighter like Banjo and Kazooie did in Smash Ultimate, and classic faces like Battletoad can also get a spot.

In addition to Xbox’s perennial ethos, a platform warrior can take advantage of all the recent acquisitions Xbox has made. The Dragonborn from Skyrim and BJ Blazkowicz from Wolfenstein just a few names that might represent Bethesda, and there are more studios to draw from that. This could be a great opportunity to fulfill the dreams of gamers who want characters like Doom Guy in Smash Ultimate. While some may consider this shameless fan service, it may make all the difference from those who are disappointed to see some of the characters in the series. Smash Ultimate just as a Mii warrior.

Bringing Xbox An Edge to PlayStation

It’s no secret that Xbox has fought an uphill battle with PlayStation in the past few years. After the launch and subsequent launch of the Xbox One, the console has struggled to reach the same heights as the consumer-friendly PS4 and its exclusive titles. The playing field has leveled somewhat with the most recent generation of consoles, but it still feels like Xbox is catching up.

There’s a void that PlayStation has left open; a dedicated platform fighter. The company created its own reception of the genre with 2012 PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, but it didn’t follow up with the sequel. If Xbox makes good use of this, it could be the monopoly that decides whether some get the PS5 or the Xbox Series X. A big driver of console purchases is their exclusivity and both Nintendo and PlayStation both. have shown that combining quality with quantity can reap great rewards.

With Xbox’s 20th consecutive anniversary, a crossover fighting game would be a fitting addition to the carnival. While there’s no news of any such game, it’s hard to deny how much potential it will have. Maybe like games like Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl and MultiVersus solidify their place in the genre, Xbox will want to join the action with a platform fighter of its own.
