Carlos Leal wins title in whacky 4-man tournament

A new LFA welterweight champion was crowned as promotion held a four-man, one-night tournament on Friday – but the road to it was winding, long and irregular.

To the end, Carlos Leal (14-3) took home the title at LFA 112 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil when he beat Junior Marques (11-6) passed unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27). While Leal’s path to the top is typical, the opposite side of the frame is the furthest from normal.

The tournament started with two quarter-finals lasting three three-minute halves. The first match was a back-and-forth brawl, in which Gabriel Bonfim (11-0) completed Brenner Alberth (8-1) through a punch at 0:38 of Round 3. On the other side of the frame, Leal needed just 69 seconds to finish. Diego Dias (13-4) with a violent knockout punch.

Bonfim vs. Real was lined up for the tournament final – until it wasn’t. Due to symptoms such as concussion, Bonfim was dropped from the match and the promotion switched to two alternatives, Quemuel Ottoni and Wendell Giacomo, who won on unaired prelims.

However, neither Ottoni nor Giacomo received medical certificates. In an unusual turn of events, Marques, who had lost to Ottani, was chosen as the replacement number 3 and placed in the final against Leal.

While lasting all three rounds, Marques ultimately lost the second game of the night when Leal wiped out all three judges’ scorecards.

In the co-main event, Otto Rodrigues broken Carlos Augusto da SilvaWin 17 eye-catching matches of victory through a unanimous decision, winning six rounds of 10-8 on the scorecards of three judges. Before the game, Rodrigues had not played since April 2017.

The most violent ending, probably happens when Kayan Krushewsky brutally beaten Junior Luiz with a pair of punishing punches. Time stops at 62 seconds after the match.

Also on the main card, fly class highlights are inflated Carlos Mota (6-0) is back in the long awaited cage as he won a pretty unanimous decision going forward Jefferson Oliveira (5-1).
