At last night’s Billboard Music Awards, a small handful of A-list stars and chart-toppers huddled in the same room as TikToker, YouTuber and a country music star on an attempted comeback tour after a leaked racist rant. To say the bar was on the floor when this invite list was made would be a massive understatement, but as far as the BBMAs are concerned, it’s completely untainted.
If the Golden Globes are Hollywood’s messy, drunken answer to the Oscars, then the Billboard Music Awards are to the Grammys, cranked up to 11 every May when the ceremony takes place as spring turns to early summer and everyone — even celebrities , who are just like us – feeling the most anxious to get out and show up.
But nobody was more ready for a night of debauchery than England’s first party girl Cara Delevingne: part-model, part-actress, dance-floor pal to New York Mayor Eric Adams, and a perennial tornado of tumult.
Fresh from sending everyone home in mysterious gold streaks at the Met Gala after showing up on the carpet in sparkling gold body paint for her uninspired version of “Gilded Glamour,” Delevingne was back at the Billboard Music Awards. After all, Delevingne has no personal interest in who wins or who loses, so why not take the opportunity to get a little wild? She has never declined the invitation!
Things started early in the night on the BBMAs’ plush gray carpet. One of the few really Big stars mingling with the dregs of internet celebrity invitees was Megan Thee Stallion, industry powerhouse and disarming charmer, nominated for Top Rap Female Artist. As Megan walked the carpet, strutted and posed, E! news Cameras captured a mischievous supermodel peeking out from behind the step-and-repeatShe mumbled incomprehensible nothings as Megan grabbed the train of her custom-made Mugler dress and tossed it in the air for photographers to capture some much-needed movement and drama.
Since photographers at events of this nature generally have no sense of boundaries when shouting directions to the stars, some began encouraging Delevingne to come out from behind the barrier and join Megan for a photo. Shouts of “Cara, come in, Cara!” were interspersed with hoarse screams of “MEGAN, LOOK RIGHT, LOOK RIGHT!”
Suddenly, Delevingne appeared on the carpet next to Megan, like a devil on her shoulder. She grabbed Megan’s train and threw it in the air herself. Megan, always professional, continued to pose and throw a few courtesy laughs at Delevingne, but in an already chaotic moment, when a photographer who sounded exactly like the character actress molested Margo Martindale, there seemed to be an unmistakable look of annoyance on her face Megan: “Could you spin over here for us in the cheap seats?”
The moment quickly became fodder for the night’s meme, with users being truthful suggest that “Your chances of being observed by Cara Delevingne are slim, but never zero.” From there, the evening only tumbled further towards Delevingne’s chaos.
During the actual show, Delevingne sat next to Megan and behind Doja Cat, something I’m sure both musicians activated their jaw joints by gritting their teeth through forced smiles as everyone shuffled in to take their seats. Doja and Megan are two incredibly energetic performers and contagious personalities, and yet Delevingne’s energy that sits between them has their collective mood 50:1 in proportion. Sitting next to someone like Cara Delevingne against your will must feel like you’re stuck at a house party next to the person who expected a tantrum before they arrived and then showed up to find it was more of a crying and – Conversation was collecting.
Sometime during the night, the BBMA’s Twitter feed caught Megan and Doja chatting between awards, and Delevingne popped up out of nowhere into the frame Throw in the doja and cheer up. “I love you both together,” Doja says, with all the energy of high school’s most popular girl, lying to your face. “That’s my bottom bitch,” Megan replies, referring to Delevingne. A rookie mistake. You cannot encourage this type of behavior lest it be made worse!
And it definitely was. A few moments later, Megan accepted the award for best female rap artist and sent her Delevingne absolutely wild, lashes out and sticks out her tongue while bobbing her head back and forth in a state of catatonia. As Megan got up to go to the stage to collect her prize, Delevingne grabbed her train of dresses once again and threw it in the air.
Your energy is very poppers-meets-molly when you’ve done both of those things after accidentally drinking a bottle of Cold Brew concentrate thinking it was already diluted. It’s unbearable enough just looking at it, I can’t imagine what it’s like to be around. Megan and Doja must be exhausted today.
Delevingne continued to turn both the BBMAs and Twitter into mutual chaos when she finally ended squirm on the floor of the venue to capture a photo by Doja Cat, Fat Joe and DJ Khaled. “Is this Cara AGAIN???” one Twitter user asked with over 20,000 likes. Delevingne’s movements are so fast it’s almost frightening. You have to wonder if she only does this at events for people she barely knows, and everyone has to get involved.
At every event, whispers ripple around the room when it is announced that she is there. Everyone is afraid that Cara Delevingne could cross their path at any moment.
It seems that Delevingne brings this energy into every room she is in. Is it her? appear at Saturdays SNL After party with Selena Gomez and Post Malone or tongue out with a bottle in hand at an event Alongside New York Mayor Eric Adams in March, she’s everywhere — and she’s bringing the party, like it or not.
But others have recently noted a pattern of Delevingne’s public behavior that’s more concerning than her unrelenting desire to go out until dawn: her apparent disregard for personal space and boundaries when it comes to black women, citing the visible ones angry looks from Doja Cat and Megan Thee Stallion, and videos from 2021 of Delevingne taking the stage with Azealia Banks while Banks was performing at Leah McSweeney’s Halloween party.
Not just Delevingne grabbed the mic from Banks As she tried to play “212,” she mumbled incoherent babble scratched all over Banks and licked her legs after handing over the mic to Banks so she could finish the song. Though Banks never hides how she’s feeling at any given moment, she was in the middle of a show performing her most popular hit, she couldn’t exactly escort Delevingne away. Also, Delevingne ended up falling off the stage after all.
To be sure, Delevingne has been in celebrity elite circles for over a decade and has been seen by everyone from Taylor Swift to Margot Robbie and many others. There’s no question that she knows just about everyone, and when she doesn’t, she’s certainly ready to get in their face until she does.
Maybe all these people really love her! Perhaps her visible expressions of outrage are all just playful bits made for the camera. But maybe she are just smiling and nodding, hoping she’ll soon find someone else to pounce on as she continues her never-ending quest for the next best party. Cara Delevingne may be our last remaining true party girl, a remnant of a bygone tongue-out, eyebrow-puckered era she never outgrew. It has become too strong now, too inescapable. We can’t get rid of them, we can only hide.
