Callum Smith ‘will be a champion again’ says new trainer Buddy McGirt as they ponder a switch to light-heavyweight | Boxing News

Callum Smith has “more puncher power for him,” says new coach Buddy McGirt, as the pair think about how to reclaim the world title.
Smith could end up in the lightweight division after dominating the super-feats and unbeaten record of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
He confirmed his new partnership with coach McGuire this week, and his new curiosity told Sky Sports: “I always thought he could fight, from the first day he met.
“He can punch, but for him there is more than the power of a fist. He needs to gain confidence in his other skills.
“I know he’s going to be a champion again.”
McGuire, an American, explained how the link came about: “Brother Callum Paul called me and asked if I wanted to adopt his brother. I went to Liverpool, we worked for a few days, now we’re here.”
In the heavyweight division that Smith is aiming for, the undefeated Russian duo of Arthur Beterbiev (IBF and WBC champions) and Dmitry Beauvoir (WBA) will dominate, while Joe Smith Jr. has the WBO belt.
“It’s a very tight distribution, a hot distribution,” McGirt said.
“If he fights a few times to get comfortable in his weight, I don’t see anyone making him a champion.”
Smith Canelo’s victory includes the WBA, WBC and WBO belts and is expected to lead the IBF Caleb Plant with the IBF to determine the undisputed champion.
McGirt already plans if Smith ever takes a second blow to the Mexican giants.
“I taught him to use his height and reach,” he said. “You can’t bring Canelo to a rhythm. You have to take him out of your element. When Canelo is comfortable, you can forget it.”
