Buzz Lightyear: Disney Toy Story spinoff starring Chris Evans release date – and will it be on Disney Plus?

Chris Evans will voice Buzz Lightyear, replacing Tim Allen, who played the Space Ranger in the original Toy Story films

One of the most popular family movie franchises, Disney Pixar’s Toy Story has seen four episodes between 1995 and 2019 so far.

The four films follow Woody, Jesse, Buzz – toys that come to life when no one is looking – as they adventure and hide their feelings from humans.

Voiced by Tim Allen in the four films, space ranger Buzz Lightyear is one of the most iconic Toy Story characters.

And now Buzz is getting a standalone film from Pixar called Lightyear, which will explore the origins of the Space Ranger action figure in the Toy Story universe.

What is Lightyear about?

Speak with Weekly entertainmentDirector Angus MacLane said, “It’s a no-nonsense sci-fi action film about the character of Buzz Lightyear.

He added that the film is about “this character, but as a space ranger, not as a toy.”

MacLane also hinted that Buzz’s notorious enemy, Emperor Zurg, might make an appearance as well.

“If the core elements of what Buzz is were going to pay off right, you’d want to make sure he had a laser, you’d probably want to make sure he had rocket legs, and you’d probably want to make sure he had a recognizable antagonist at some point “, he said. “But of course I can’t say anything at this point.”

Who is starring in it?

While the Buzz Lightyear toy was voiced by Tim Allen (Santa Claus, handyman) in which toy story Movies, it’s Chris Evans cast as the fictional astronaut himself.

You’ll likely recognize Evans as the comic book hero from Captain America The Avengers franchise, but other notable projects Evans has starred in include Defending Jacob, Knives Out, Snowpiercer, Scott Pilgrim vs the World and Not another teen movie.

In a statement about the role, Evans said: “The phrase ‘a dream come true’ gets thrown around a lot, but I’ve never meant it that seriously in my life.

“Anyone who knows me knows that my love for animated films runs deep. I can’t believe I get to be a part of the Pixar family and work with these truly brilliant artists who tell stories like no other.

“Watching you work is nothing short of magic. I pinch myself every day.”

Evans shared the trailer on Twitter and wrote: “I have goosebumps. And will do it every time I watch this trailer. Or listen to a Bowie song. Or do you have any thoughts between now and July because nothing has ever made me happier and more grateful than knowing that I’m a part of it and it’s basically always on my mind.

Other cast details have been kept under wraps so far, with no further announcements as to who will be voicing the film.

directing light year is Angus MacLane, who has worked in the animation department on a number of major animated films, including A Bug’s Life, Monsters Inc, Cars, Ratatouille, WALLE, Up and toy story 2 and 3.

He also co-directed Find Dory 2016 alongside Andrew Stanton and led the toy story shorts Toy Story of Terror and Toy Story Toons: Little Roasts.

When will Lightyear be released?

First announced in 2020, light year is scheduled to hit theaters on June 17, 2022.

Will it be on Disney+?

There are currently no plans for a release light year immediately on Disney+, instead it will be in theaters first. It hasn’t been announced when it might appear on the streaming service.

All previous toy story Movies are currently available to stream via Disney+.

Disney+ is currently available for £7.99 a month or £79.90 for a full year. While it offered a free trial when the streaming platform first launched, it’s no longer available.
