MILWAUKEE — Earlier this week, Giannis Antetokounmpo hit the headlines with a performance of 47 points, 9 recoveries outperforming Anthony Davis and Los Angeles Lakers. But if he’s proven anything so far in his career, it’s that he’s always had the ability to elevate himself. He did it in Milwaukee Bucks‘117-108 won first Orlando Magic on Saturday night.
In just 90 seconds, he darted into the lane to do a spinning hook jump, and never looked back. He ended the night with 32 points, 20 rebounds, five assists, three blocks and two steals on 8/16 from the field and 15 of 23 from the free throw. It wasn’t the best game Giannis had ever played, but it was one of the most complete.
It also made history. Giannis only needed 30 minutes to register those numbers, which earned him 30 point match, 20 bounces, 5 fastest assists in NBA history – or, at least, since minutes started being tracked back in 1951. Also, it’s Tuesday’s match 30/20/5 for Giannis. The only players with this many performances are Charles Barkley (8), Kevin Garnett (4) and Tim Duncan (4). Pretty good company.
Not many teams do, but Magic simply doesn’t have the answers for him around the basket. He’s shot 7/10 laps around the rim, and won a whopping 23 free throws, the most of any player this season and the pinnacle of his career. When it was necessary to tame a fledgling magical court of war, he did, and when a little more dexterity was needed, he also showed part of his skill. And sometimes, like this over-possessiveness in the third quarter, he mixes the two.
He is also a threat in defence. Has 18 defensive bounces, very important in the absence of Brook Lopez. So often this season, the Bucks have struggled with glasses. Not so in this game. He took two steals, parried two and deflected several other lines at the perimeter. His ability to impact the game on both ends like this is what has lifted Giannis to another level.
Bucks head coach Mike Budenholzer said: “Rebounds and blocked shots, and to some extent, steals, but especially shots that are blocked and bounced back. is an indication of his activity.” “He’s focused on the position, he’s playing. and we need that from him.”
