Bruce Campbell, who has played many roles, including The Adventures of Brisco County Jr., Burn Announcement, My Name Is Bruce, and Bubba Ho-Tep, revealed in a recent interview that he’s no longer playing the character that helped put him on the map Ash Williams in Dead Devil Franchising.
Campbell performed the role of Ash Williams for almost 40 years in a series of films about friends who travel to a chalet in the woods and unwittingly release evil spirits after discovering a cursed book and a tape recorder. The actor, who began playing Williams in 1981, portrayed the character in the franchise’s trilogy titled Evil Dead, Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness.
In addition to the movies, he has also voiced the character in the 2000, 2003, 2005, 2011 and 2016 video games. Campbell appeared on the small screen as Williams on the show Starz Ash vs. Evil Dead. The series ran from 2015 to 2018.
While promoting his latest project, Black Friday, Campbell said Collider that he finished playing Williams. The reason behind the character’s retirement is that the 63-year-old cannot physically describe him anymore. He said, “I’m done with Ash, so that determines a lot of where we’re going with the series without that character, but there’s more to the story. We’re working on that focusing on books these days. That lovely book is all over the place, and that’s how we play it. That book ends up in an urban setting with a single mother, so let’s see what happens. It’s been fun working with it. There won’t be any traditional form of Dead Devil anymore.”
Campbell added while mentioning Dead Devil creator, “Ash is gone. I retired this character because I can’t do him anymore, so why bother? Why do I do that? It’s time to hang up the chainsaw. But we’re still filmmakers, we’re still producers, we’re still creative guys, so we asked ourselves, “How do I go about this?” Sam [Raimi] Fede Alvarez carefully chose to do the remake a few years ago. He chose Lee Cronin for the role. These are Sam Raimi’s boosters that we hope get the job done. ”
When asked if Campbell would miss the role of Ash Williams, Campbell bluntly said: “No. Whatever the cliché is, I’ll leave it as it is [the] table. I have nothing else to give. The three seasons are the longest of my life… I feel like we’ve really done all the knots, and he’s fulfilled his destiny written in that ancient book. He’s the one destined to defeat evil in the past, present, and future, and he’s landed with a hot robot chick at the end to go kick the future. What else do you need?”
Although Campbell will no longer play the role of Ash Williams, he is currently producing the latest installment of the series The Demon of Death Rises will be released in 2022 on HBO.
