It’s the best time of year to eat strawberries, as the summer months in the UK produce many of the fruits you see on supermarket shelves.

So when is the strawberry season running until – and how much nutritional value is in each piece of fruit?

Here’s everything you need to know.

When are British strawberries in season?

You can buy British strawberries between April and October every year.

Until the 1990s, the strawberry season lasted only a few weeks in midsummer.

However, thanks to technological advances – for example better greenhouses and cultivation techniques – the season lasts more than 6 months a year.

In fact, the UK is completely self-sufficient on strawberries between May and October.

The season typically begins in southern England and ends in north-east Scotland.

Outside of this period, the fruit you see in the supermarkets comes from Spain, Morocco, Egypt and Israel.

As a rule of thumb, locally produced strawberries are likely to be fresher than those produced overseas.

If you want to know where the pack of strawberries you buy at the supermarket comes from, there is usually a label on the pack that will let you know.

If it’s a British grower you can sometimes see where and by whom the berry was grown.

How good is the 2022 strawberry harvest?

In the UK, the weather can change on the fly.

The intensity of temperatures, how sunny or gloomy it is, and the timing of these climatic changes can all have a major impact on when the harvest is available to consumers, how much fruit is produced, and how good it is.

According to British Berry Growers, the trade organization representing berry growers, the 2022 strawberry harvest is sweeter than the fruit that will be produced in 2021.

Because in April – a key month for strawberry cultivation – there were 166 hours of sunshine.

The Met Office says that amount of sunshine was 7% above the average for the month.

“We have enjoyed bright days this spring coupled with cool nights that allow the strawberry plants to rest well and channel their daytime energy into overnight production of high natural sugars,” said Rupert Carter, Technical Director at WB Chambers Farms in Kent.

“This process makes the berries sweeter and is one of the main reasons the fruit tastes so good.”

Brighter weather also meant UK grown strawberries were available in May compared to June 2021.

How many calories are in strawberries?

Considering how cute they can be, you might be worried that devouring strawberries might not be good for your waistline.

However, they are not as high in calories as you might think.

An average strawberry contains 22 calories and 4.8 grams of sugar, as well as essential nutrients.

Eating seven strawberries a day will provide you with your daily recommended amount of vitamin C.

They also contain vitamin K, manganese, folic acid, potassium, riboflavin, vitamins B5 and B6, copper, magnesium, fiber and phytochemicals. British strawberries will be ‘sweeter’ in 2022, growers say
