Brisbane, Australia, picked to host 2032 Olympics

TOKYO – Brisbane was selected on Wednesday to host the 2032 Olympics, the inevitable winner in an IOC-directed one-city race to avoid rival bids.

The Olympics will return to Australia 32 years after the famous 2000 Sydney Olympics. Melbourne was celebrated in 1956.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison told IOC members in an 11-minute live video link from his office: “We know what it takes to host a successful Olympics in Australia.

When the prize was confirmed later, with Brisbane winning by 72-5, Morrison raised both arms in the air and gave two thumbs up.

The victory resulted in a fireworks display in Brisbane that was broadcast to IOC members at their five-star hotel in Tokyo.

Brisbane follows the 2028 host Los Angeles for 11 years in preparation to host the Olympics. Paris will host in 2024.

The 2032 deal appears to be in place months before a final decision is made at the IOC meeting, held ahead of Friday’s opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics.

The IOC granted exclusive negotiating rights to Brisbane in February. That decision blinded Olympic officials in Qatar, Hungary and Germany with their own stalled bid plans.

Although the outcome was expected, a high-level Australian delegation arrived in Tokyo amid the COVID-19 pandemic to present speeches, films and promises on stage.

The city of Brisbane sent Mayor Adrian Schrinner, Queensland sent Prime Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk and the Australian federal government sent Sports Minister Richard Colbeck to appeal to Olympic voters.

They feature longtime Australian Olympic official John Coates, now vice-president of the IOC, who shaped the rapid selection process two years ago and has now rewarded his Brisbane bid.

The format is designed for the first time to cut campaign costs, give the IOC more control in discreetly dealing with preferred candidates, and eliminate the risk of buying votes.

The project was described by the IOC as “a passion-driven, athlete-centered offering from a sport-loving nation.” Events will be held across Queensland, including on the Gold Coast, which hosted the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Brisbane’s famous cricket stadium, known as Gabba, will be upgraded and could host the sport at the Olympics. Cricket was played once at the Olympics, at the 1900 Paris Olympics.

The next three host countries for the Summer Olympics – starting in Paris in 2024 – are now secured in the rich and traditionally Olympic nations without any trio facing a relinquishment. dispute vote.

The IOC and its practice president, Thomas Bach, broke the mold of traditional bidding campaigns and held votes to lock down preferred cities with minimal risk.

Paris and LA competed for 2024 until Bach and Coates oversaw including the 2028 right in an unprecedented double award four years ago.

Future home teams bring stability to the IOC which has been plagued by two previous Summer Olympics competitions tainted by allegations of vote-buying as multiple cities are voting.

The 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and the postponed Tokyo 2020 Games are still being investigated by French prosecutors. They have alluded to officials subsequently losing their positions in the IOC family as active or honorary members.

A low-risk future beckons the IOC after the often troubled Tokyo Olympics, and the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in February, will bring China’s human rights record under scrutiny.

Key partners have also been secured until 2032. IOC-signed broadcast deals with NBC and top-level sponsors like Coca-Cola, Visa and Omega have been signed over the next decade.

With only major cities hosting the Summer Olympics from Beijing in 2008 to Los Angeles, Brisbane has positioned itself as a new type of project.

Palaszczuk told voters: “We want to show the world that mid-sized cities and regions can host the Olympics without financial hardship or being late for deadlines.

Brisbane says it already has 84% of stadiums and event venues to meet the IOC’s modern need to avoid overspending and potential white elephant projects.

Brisbane officials say a new swimming arena is planned and billions of dollars will be spent on transport projects – not because of the Olympics but because of the time it takes for them, Brisbane officials said.
