Ethan McCourt died after being seriously injured in a car accident on his way to school

Tributes were paid to a 6-year-old boy who died after a devastating car crash in Northern Ireland.

Ethan McCourt was just days away from his seventh birthday when he died from his injuries following the accident in County Antrim, with his father also injured.

His death has left Ethan’s local community heartbroken with heartfelt tributes to the boy.

Ethan died days before his seventh birthday

Ethan was in the car with his father, Declan, when he was injured in the accident involving a vehicle on his way to school at approximately 7:45 a.m. Monday, June 20.

The crash happened in Magherafelt while the couple were traveling to Ballaghy Primary School.

Police confirmed the crash involved “a black Mercades colliding with the roundabout.”

Ethan died five days after the crash, his death taking place on June 25. He was due to celebrate his seventh birthday in the last week of June.

His father is still in the hospital being treated for his injuries.

“There is a terrible sadness over the village”

Ethan’s local community in Troome has sent their condolences to the boy’s family following the disturbing news.

Right Rev. Monsignor Andrew Dolan describes the six-year-old as a “typical little boy” who was “full of fun.”

Speaking to the BBC, the Reverend said: “He loved playing at St Mary’s School with all his little friends.

“The teachers and just the whole school are completely shocked.

“Last week there was a big shock, but now, after this news, a terrible sadness is spreading throughout the village.

“Everyone here in Bellaghy has and has Ethan and his entire family in their prayers.”

Honors for “beautiful little boy”

Speaking about the “devastating news”, the Bellaghy Primary School Parents-Teachers Association said: “I was so saddened to hear that six-year-old Ethan McCourt, a student at St Mary’s Primary School, Bellaghy, died after this tragic accident died week.

“I can’t imagine the impact this devastating news is having on his family and the St. Mary’s school community.

“As the school family at Bellaghy PS, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Ethan’s family, friends and staff at St. Mary’s PS.”

Tributes also poured in on social media, with a member of the local community saying, “Overall, Ethan was a lovely little boy who enjoyed playing with his friends at school and seeing his grandparents.”

Emma Sheerin, MLA for Mid Ulster spoke about the heartbreak within the community.

She said: “The community is in shock and sadness at the death of local boy Ethan McCourt following a traffic accident at Castledawson Roundabout last Monday.

“At this sad and difficult time, I offer my deepest condolences to his family, friends and teammates at Bellaghy GAC. The whole congregation will flock to her.”

Local sports team Wolfe Tones Baile Eachaidh GAC sent their blessing to Ethan’s family with the words “Ar dheis de go raibh a anam dilis” which means “May his holy soul be on the right side of God”.
