Book review of Travels with George: In Search of Washington and His Legacy by Nathaniel Philbrick

Whereas “Travels With George” echoes that theme, it’s a totally different form of e book, based mostly on Philbrick’s resolution to comply with Washington’s path, bringing his spouse, Melissa, and his lovable if feisty canine, Dora, alongside on the journey. His mannequin, so he tells us, is John Steinbeck’s “Travels With Charley: In Search of America,” and he embraces Steinbeck’s conceit that “we don’t make a journey; the journey takes us.” Because of this, there are locations within the e book the place we lose sight of Washington altogether, as the main target shifts from America then to America now, and from Washington to Philbrick, his roving household and the America he sees. In these pages, “Travels With George” virtually turns into a memoir.
