Book review of Big Vape: The Incendiary Rise of Juul by Jamie Ducharme

Juul Labs is headquartered in San Francisco, and “Big Vape” limits the free-spirited, and sometimes reckless, corporate culture of a Silicon Valley startup. Ducharme argues that executives cut regulatory corners. Instead of rigorous safety testing, employees sampled new concoctions. The product is named for a minor. But it all worked out, at least for a while, and Juul’s success led to its marriage to Big Tobacco. In 2018, Altria Group, the parent company of Philip Morris, paid $12.8 billion for a 35% stake in Juul Labs. According to Ducharme’s comments, Juul is no longer a Big Tobacco disruptor, but an accomplice.
