Bomb squad explodes fireworks, injuring 17 people

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Facts Los Angeles Police Chief say a disaster Fireworks explosion injures 17 people and rocked a neighborhood last month possibly due to a miscalculation by bomb technicians.

Police Chief Michel Moore said Monday that the bomb squad miscalculated the explosive weight of the homemade fireworks when they detonated them in a chamber.

He said five bomb squad members were removed from field duty as the investigation continued.

They may face discipline.

Bomb technicians estimate the weight of the explosive and a charge to be about 16.5 pounds in a standard measurement.

Authorities who examined the remains after the explosion calculated the weight to be more than 42 pounds.
