Bodycam Video Shows Moments Before NYPD Lieutenant Was Shot In Ankle Apprehending Suspect In The Bronx – CBS New York

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — An NYPD lieutenant was launched from the hospital Saturday after being shot in a single day within the Bronx.
As CBS2’s Kiran Dhillon studies, it occurred round midnight close to Lyman Place and East 169th Avenue within the Foxhurst part.

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea stated the lieutenant and three officers assigned to fight gun violence within the space have been on patrol after they noticed a person they thought had a weapon. They tried to apprehend him, however he instantly ran off.
When officers caught up, a battle ensued, which resulted within the suspect firing his gun.
“Clearly armed with a firearm. Repeatedly telling him to let go of the firearm. Throughout this battle, we imagine the person fires a one spherical, which strikes our lieutenant one time within the ankle. It’s a through-and-through wound, which then strikes a close-by parked automobile. The firearm was finally recovered. This battle took roughly 5 to eight minutes. The person was safely taken into custody, with no accidents,” Shea stated.
Police launched bodycam video exhibiting the incident.

Within the harrowing video, 4 officers could be heard pleading with the armed man to place his gun away, saying, “Cease reaching for it, dude,” and “He’s reaching for it, man. Cease reaching for it.”
“I’ve to commend the 4 officers for the unimaginable restraint proven on video,” Shea stated.
The lieutenant was taken to the hospital and handled for a gunshot wound to the ankle.
The NYPD launched a photograph of the gun, a 9mm Smith and Wesson, which was recovered on the scene.

Police have recognized the suspect as 26-year-old Jerome Roman, from the Bronx. In keeping with police, he’s affiliated with a gang and has 25 prior arrests.
“He’s a well known to us gang member who has beforehand been arrested for a gun, eight months in the past, in that very precinct, and several other years earlier than that as a firearms conviction,” Shea stated.
“He’s fortunate,” stated Lou Turco, president of the Lieutenants Benevolent Affiliation. “A person like this with that prison previous was out to shoot someone. Little doubt about it. These officers saved someone’s life final evening.”
The Police Benevolent Affiliation reacted in a tweet, saying, “Praying for a full and quick restoration of our brother. That is what it takes to get gun-carrying criminals off our streets. When the prison justice system spits them proper again out, because it did with this perp eight months in the past, it endangers each cops and group.”
