Blueshirts Legend Rod Gilbert, ‘Mr. Ranger,’ Dead At 80 – CBS New York

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP)Rod Gilbert, the Corridor of Fame proper wing who starred for the New York Rangers and helped Canada win the 1972 Summit Collection, had died. He was 80.

Gilbert’s household confirmed the demise to Rangers on Sunday. The crew didn’t present particulars.

“I’m deeply saddened by the passing of Rod Gilbert — one of many biggest Rangers to ever play for our group and one of many biggest ambassadors the sport of hockey has ever had,” Rangers proprietor James Dolan stated in a press release.

“Whereas his on-ice achievements rightly made him a Corridor of Famer, it was his love for the Rangers and the individuals of New York that endeared him to generations of followers and eternally earned him the title, ‘Mr. Ranger.’”

From Montreal, Gilbert spent his total 18-year NHL profession with the Rangers — a profession that was almost derailed In 1960 when he broke a vertebra in his again after slipping on rubbish on the ice whereas enjoying for Guelph within the junior Ontario Hockey Affiliation.

Gilbert recovered and ended up with 406 objectives and 615 assists in 1,065 regular-season video games and 34 objectives and 33 assists in 79 playoff video games. He holds Rangers data for objectives and factors. In 1972, he had a objective and three assists in six video games for Canada in its historic eight-game victory of the Soviet Union within the Summit Collection.

Inducted into the Hockey Corridor of Fame in 1982, Gilbert spent a few years within the Rangers group after his retirement as a player.

Gilbert appeared in eight All-Star Video games and acquired the Invoice Masterton Trophy in 1976 because the NHL player who “greatest exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.”

His No. 7 jersey turned the primary quantity ever to be retired by the Rangers when it was raised to Madison Sq. Backyard rafters on Oct. 14, 1979. In 2007, the Nationwide Hockey League Alumni Affiliation honored Gilbert with the Man of the 12 months Award.
