Blizzard announces when Loot Boxes will no longer be available for purchase in Overwatch

After a seemingly unbearably long wait surveillance 2The release of is just around the corner. The game intends to shake up a number of things from the original, including how monetization and loot boxes are handled.

Loot boxes are implemented in many games to randomize what premium gear and cosmetics players receive. Purchasing or earning a loot box gives a player a chance at incredibly epic loot, but may also reveal something less exciting. Gone are the days of store-bought loot boxes over watch come to an end, and it will come before surveillance 2‘s publication.

Over on the official Blizzard forums, at over watch Fan asked a question about when loot boxes would be unavailable. Community Manager Craig replied, explaining that the current plan is that loot boxes will no longer be sold in the game’s shop after the current Anniversary Remix Vol 3 event. After August 30th, Loot Boxes can no longer be purchased with real currency. The information was also recently confirmed over watch Sticky Notes.

However, Loot Crates will still be present in-game and can be earned without spending any money until then surveillance 2‘s start day. Free, earnable loot boxes will continue to be distributed until October 4th, from which point players will be transferred over watch to surveillance 2. However, if players want the satisfaction of actually opening their loot chests to discover their prize, they should plan to do so before making the move. Blizzard previously announced that at the time of the transfer, all unopened loot boxes will be automatically opened and their contents added to the player’s account for use surveillance 2.

There will likely be an adjustment period for most players moving to the sequel as the in-game currency will also change. Existing currencies such as credits and OWL tokens will carry over to the new game, but not all items in the new shop can be purchased with these currencies. A new in-game currency will be added in its place, which players can buy for real money.

Although the over watch Loot boxes are iconic, loot boxes in general have caused a lot of controversy over their years. Players are often frustrated with buying loot boxes, and governments have even suggested banning loot boxes outright and making them a form of gambling.
