Blizzard announces new survival game in development for PC and consoles
Blizzard Entertainment is offering careers at its company to work on a recently announced survival game, housed in a brand new intellectual property.
Blizzard Entertainment has been known for its three pillars – Warcraft, StarCraftand Diablo – For a very long time. The idea of adding a new franchise to its classic yet conservative repertoire suggests closer to a hopeful dream than a reality. At BlizzCon 2014, Blizzard caused waves in the gaming world when Overwatch was announced.
Today, Blizzard Entertainment did it again by announcing new intellectual property to the world, but the context and circumstances of the announcement tell a different story than that told more than seven years ago. There’s no fanfare or fireworks to accompany this humble look at the company’s future as a video game developer. Just the promise of a new adventure in a new world and an invitation to create a new universe as part of the Blizzard team.
The Project in Mind, and the next chapter in Blizzard’s story, is being described by a job posting on the company’s website as a survival game for PC and consoles. One wonders if this project will be announced at BlizzCon 2022 before being canceledbut given the modesty of its announcement, the signs are that the game is still several years away.
There is no title attached to the project and nothing is known about the game outside of its genre, but the article talks about joining a collaborative team of experienced developers at the early stages of a project. New project in a new world. With Blizzard Entertainment’s turmoil following allegations of harassment against the company last June, as well as Microsoft’s recent acquisitionthe announcement of this project is likely to provide Blizzard fans with a reassuring peek for years to come.
There are many possible directions that Blizzard could take with this project. A survival game Unlike Valheim along with Blizzard’s iconic art style will be a match made in heaven. Alternatively, the project could focus more on crafting and a calmer gameplay round of sandbox survival games such as Minecraft.
Following Blizzard’s string of delays and cancellations following recent controversies, this project represents a breath of fresh air for the company. A promise of untapped potential if Blizzard Entertainment can fix it under Microsoft’s protection. With Bobby Kotick may be on his way out, much of the game’s development will take place in the new mode. What can be brought or demanded now belongs only to the realm of speculation.
