“I’m a digital girl,” Conyears-Ervin said.
Conyears-Ervin spoke to ABC 7 Correspondent Samantha Chatman about her plans as city treasurer, her upbringing, and why she’s dedicated to giving youth access to the industry. financial services in episode 8 of the ABC 7 online series “Black & Powerful.”
A native of Chicago, Conyears-Ervin was born in the city’s Englewood neighborhood and raised on the West Side by a single mother. Conyears-Ervin said she is very independent because she has watched her mother work tirelessly to raise her three daughters.
“My mom always taught me to never be limited by my zip code,” says Conyears-Ervin. “As a working mother, I don’t know how I would have been able to become city treasurer if I hadn’t been trained by my mother like I was. That independence, that tenacity, I feel I have. can overcome a lot.”
Prior to being elected city treasurer in 2019, Conyears-Ervin worked in the private sector and was also the State Representative of Illinois for District 10. As Treasurer, Conyears-Ervin said she worked. to protect taxpayer dollars, support small businesses, and educate young people about financial resources and the financial services industry.
She said representation issues, “When I told them (students) what you see on the street what looks like big money being exchanged, you didn’t see anything. Look at the service industry. finances and the amount being transferred, millions of dollars in transactions at a time. It could be you.”
Conyears-Ervin still proudly calls herself a West Side resident, living in the Garfield Park neighborhood with her husband and young daughter. She said every day she sees the needs of the community and that’s what drives her to work to make a difference.
