BioShock turns 15 this week

BioShock was one of the most influential first-person shooters of the Xbox 360 and PS3 era, and the game is about to celebrate a milestone.

Although video games are still in their infancy compared to something like the movie industry, they’ve been around longer than some might believe. For example, Morrowind turned 20 a few months ago, and while there were others Elder Scrolls Games there, including The Elder Scrolls Online, it might not feel like it’s been around for two decades. For some older gamers, it’s hard to imagine that games that felt new not too long ago have gone into double digits. Likewise, BioShock is approaching a milestone.

GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Originally released in 2007, at a time when the Xbox 360 and PS3 were at odds with the power of the Nintendo Wii, the first BioShock entry was a milestone for the FPS genre. During this time the gambling industry became saturated with call of Duty Type games and it needed a breath of fresh air. Then came the underwater horror shooter from 2K Games, which single-handedly upped the ante for what was possible in video game storytelling. The setting, character development, and that iconic twist helped make it an award-winning release.

It has reached such heights that it has even become a favorite of some prominent players. For example, billionaire Elon Musk is said to be a big fan of BioShockas well as half-life, mass effect 2and Saints Row 4. Influenced by people like system shock 2which itself is a classic horror sci-fi FPS, the first BioShock The game is often considered the best of the entire series, with a Metacritic score of 96 on PC.

Overall, however, the franchise has been pretty quiet over the years. BioShock 4 is currently in development and marks the first major entry in the series since 2013 BioShock Infinite. There was episode two of burial at sea DLC in 2014 as well as the release of the collection in 2016, but in terms of a full game it’s been almost ten years since fans saw a new installment.

With the legendary opening showing players the city of Rapture for the first time, the original has gone down as one of the most cinematic sci-fi games in recent history. The second entry wasn’t as well received as its predecessor, although it still has a strong following, and the third game was highly acclaimed, but again wasn’t without its flaws. Whether the next BioShock will be able to recover that magic of the first remains seen at this stage.

BioShock 4 is under development.
