While there are certainly sales throughout the year, being a gamer isn’t necessarily a cheap hobby. For that reason, many gamers look to opportunities to earn some money back when they buy games and consoles, but unfortunately, such an opportunity seems to be coming to an end for most users.

For those who don’t know, Sony and the PlayStation Store have been offering a rewards system for a while. Sony Rewards, when linked to a PlayStation Store account, give the buyer points for every purchase made through the store, which can then be used for discounts and game purchases. However, some new requirements are being put in place to earn points.

In an email that started rolling out to subscribers today, major changes were announced to Sony Rewards Program will begin January 1, 2022. Currently, all users can earn one point for every dollar spent on the PlayStation Store, and users can earn even more if they make purchases through the card credit Sony or PlayStation. However, all of this will come to an end at the end of the month, and from that point on, only Sony or PlayStation credit card holders will be able to earn points.

It’s not entirely clear why Sony suddenly and quietly made this change to its program. While many commenters noted that it took a long time to earn enough points to redeem them for what they wanted, being cut off from the opportunity to save money or earn a new fortune was not well received by the community. Many users dislike the idea of having to sign up for a particular credit card to earn points, while others swear by the idea of shopping at PlayStation Store total.

For those who still have points earned through the store, according to Sony’s official terms, those points will remain active for a while, depending on user actions. Points are set to expire 5 years after they were acquired, but are not active on Sony Rewards Platform will cause them to expire after 18 months. Those who currently have points and haven’t or won’t apply for a credit card through Sony will want to use them in the near future.

Thankfully for PlayStation gamers, the rumors claim a PlayStation program competes with Xbox Game Pass on my way to. While signing up for a subscription service – even one of value – is not the same as earning rewards for one’s purchases, it can at least provide a way for players to have access to AAA titles without breaking the bank.
