Best AFK Melee Training Methods in OSRS (F2P + P2P) – FandomSpot

There are quite a few good ways to train your melee stats in OSRS, and the best way depends entirely on whether you want to AFK outright or make some money while doing so.
With that said, here are all the best methods to consider:
- Crab (stone, sand and ammonium)
- Nightmare zone (most fees, slight returns over time)
- Vyrewatch Sentinels (high level, expensive drop chance)
- Secure Giant Spider stronghold (F2P friendly)
While members have a variety of methods to choose from, free players will (unfortunately) often have to rely on a monster to train their afk.
Note: While it’s technically possible to train an afk to be basically any aggressive creature, this article focuses only on the best and “most fearsome” creatures of the bunch. You’ll have to check your screen a lot less when killing Giant Spiders, compared to things like Greater Demons or Rune Dragons.
Method 1: Crab

Beginning nearly two decades ago in 2004 with Rock Crabs and continuing to this day, RuneScape players have a long tradition of killing thousands of crabs to increase their stats with as little effort as possible. .
Due to the lack of combat stats (minus hits, of course), crabs make an excellent training method for accounts of basically every level “frame” there are.
Even with the minimum defense bonus, you can still completely survive without any danger of deathand will only need to click twice every 10 minutes for the crabs to become aggressive again.
While ammonite crabs are considered the best due to the highest health of any crab, it is also what makes them the most popular and busiest of the bunch.
For that reason, lower tier accounts that have trouble finding space should consider accessing other variations, as the hourly experience will be pretty much the same.
Note: Ammonite crabs are the only ones with a request, locked after the intermediate quest “Bone Voyage”.
Method 2: Nightmare Zone

Nightmare Zone (often abbreviated as NMZ) is a mini-game in which players go head-to-head with mission bosses they’ve been best at in the past.
Defeating a boss/monster in the NMZ will reward you with points, which can be spent in Dom Onion’s chest (located just outside the arena) to buy some gifts like:
- Herb box contains many random herbs (best gp to score ratio)
- Scrolls of Redirection (changes Teleport to internal tablet’s destination)
- Holds different items (such as Slayer Helmets and battle rings)
Another way to use your reward points is to buy especially The drug can only be used inside the NMZ. The most notable things for melee training are Overload and Absorption Poison.
I won’t go into depth about NMZ strategies (which will probably take up the whole article), but the most common way to train is to customize your rumble with bosses that only use melee attacks and protect against them pray or with absorbent drugs.
Note: Ironman can only use the shop to buy impregnated and redirected scrolls.
Method 3: Vyrewatch Sentinels

The Vyrewatch Sentinels are the guardians of the vampire capital, Darkmeyer.
These guys (and friends) attack any player on the site who isn’t wearing a certain “Vyre Noble” skin and will continue their aggression even after the usual 10 minutes have passed.
The most common method of killing Vyrewatch Sentinels is to wear prayer or tank gear (like proselyte or justiciar), and use a few next to the bank, so you can either hoard your drops or draw more materials when needed.
In addition, the Sentinels also have a 1/1500 chance to drop the elusive blood shard, worth a little over 9 million (as of now).
Note: Access to Darkmeyer and Vyrewatch Sentinels requires completing the main quest “Father’s Deadly Sins”.
Method 4: Secure Giant Spider Stronghold (F2P)

This method is strictly for free-players and purely for the afk experience.
Stronghold Security is home to various creatures and monsters, and among them is the Giant Spider.
These spiders can be found on the third level of the stronghold (Pit of Pestilence), and what makes them especially great to train is that they are always aggressive towards players of all battle levels. .
Unfortunately, their drop board includes literally are just starter reels, so there’s not much room for profit (unless you get lucky with the reels).
If you want to be more resourceful and cut costs, you can bring a fly rod and some feathers to fish and cook for yourself right outside Barbarian Village!
Additional Melee Training Tips AFK
Whether you plan on training for a short or long time, here are a few tips that you should know before you start:
- You should always wear equipment that gives you the highest power bonus.
- Compostable armor (such as Barrows shards) should be avoided, as it’s often unnecessary and helps cut costs (especially for the methods listed here)
- The “NPC Aggression Timer” plugin on Runelite is useful for monitoring timers and making it easier for you to reset aggro.
- On a similar note, the “Inactivity Notifier” plugin can notify you when your health and prayer points are running low, or if you are about to log out of inactivity.
