“They are hiding from civil society,” said Tanya Lokshina, a researcher with Human Rights Watch. She said that since the controversial election and the protests that followed, the government has shut down more than 300 NGOs and shut down dozens of media groups. Some 150,000 Belarusians have fled to Poland, she added, and tens of thousands are in Lithuania, “astonishing numbers for a small country like Belarus”.
