The Gunk takes place in distant regions of space. Rani and her partner, Beck, land on an alien planet because they are in need of resources and jobs. What they found was a planet contaminated with this black rust, which they called a junk. What begins as a fueling mission turns into a deep dive into an ancient civilization.
This is the first original game that doesn’t belong to SteamWorld from Image & Form developers for quite some time. Is it really connected in some way and how exactly does it work? All of these questions and more are covered in these getting started tips for relatively short trip in The Gunk.
6 Prepare for a slow burn
It’s hard to understand what The Gunk before joining. At its core, the game is a platformer with some Metroidvania elements. There are enemies to fight but the game is more focused on discover and revive. Rani is more interested in cleaning the planet than fighting it. This means the first hour or so is slow.
Rani won’t have much other than the ability to suck up trash, enemies, or plants. Eventually, vertical points will be established, allowing players to return to camp to interact with their partner, Beck. This can add some nice story detail to fuel the player’s sense of urgency. Camp is also where Rani can upgrade her cybernetic arm. The basic tip here is to stay the same as the game flow will become more fluid once the warping points are detected.
5 Upgrade what
The first few upgrades are required but it can be difficult to know what to build after that. Like a game is a platformer focus on discovery, speed is important. Rani starts off as a rather slow character, which adds to the tedium of The Gunk’s literally slow start.
The Hydraulic braces will allow Rani to run. This is the absolute first thing players should buy freely. Then it is a bounce. At this point, the player should have enough metal and plant scraps to extend the working range of the vacuum along with its suction speed. That can also speed up the process. However, like any game with upgrades, you shouldn’t spend every a little bit of currency all in one. Saving on materials is also a good idea.
4 Thorough exploration
The Gunk doesn’t provide a good map, so players will have to establish themselves a keen sense of direction. They should survey an area when entering it. Look up and down and try to spot anything that looks like it could be climbed.
It is also important to scan everything in sight. Some plants and rocks can be sucked up for use during the aforementioned upgrade. Other things will give Rani more ideas of what she can do to upgrade her gear. It doesn’t make the most sense but it is The Gunk’s philosophy. Players don’t have to understand it, they just have to follow it.
3 Watch out for damage caused by fall
Platform games need for solid mechanics to make their jumping fun and intuitive. That should be the goal of any entry in this category but The Gunk falter about that a little bit. Some gaps require perfect pixel hopping; One wrong move can cause spelling trouble. If the player falls into bad water or a pit, this will return them to their last solid ground.
It’s not instant death but it can still be frustrating for players who know they should make a jump. Another background thing that can confuse players is inconsistent with jumping from places. Sometimes they can make the jump while other times The Gunk will put the player back on solid ground as if they were in a danger. Just be careful. That’s overall advice when it comes to dancing. Mechanic needs some tweaking.
2 Turn on subtitles or use headphones
Much of the story is told through Rani and Beck chatting back and forth on the radio. However, many people prefer to turn off subtitles for most games, it’s important to turn them on The Gunk. It can be difficult to hear them even when the sound is adjusted in the options.
Headphones will also help with this dilemma. However, some players may not have a pair at their disposal. The downside to this is that the overall sound of the game is rather quiet, different from Rani and Beck’s jokes. This can make the headset seem superfluous. Ultimately, whichever path a player chooses will help them in the long run.
first Regular savings
The Gunk thankfully allows players to save at any time. However, there is a secret to this: all progress will be logged but Rani will have to restart from the last checkpoint when players upload their files.
While not perfect, this option is better than not having the option to save whenever. Not every game could be like Pokemon this has allowed players to save and pick up where they left off in the 90s. It would be great if more developers followed this idea, but The Gunk still receive support when meeting players in the middle.
The Epic Games Store revealed the game it’s giving away on December 23, making it the eighth game since the mystery sale began.
