Battlefield 2042 Player turns game into MilSim using portal

A YouTuber and Battlefield 2042 use the game’s Portal mode to turn DICE’s multiplayer FPS into a relatively hardcore tactical shooter.

Battlefield 2042 portal mode remains

Battlefield 2042 is not a game specifically intended to accurately portray modern warfare. Even without the light sci-fi elements, the franchise was born “Rendezook” mid-air missile trick incorrect Arma 3.

However, that didn’t stop Youtuber Karmakut from trying to convert Battlefield 2042 into a powerful military simulation. While there’s just so much a content creator can do in the game’s engine, he’s managed to recreate a reasonably realistic simulation of modern warfare.

VIDEO GAME OF THE DAY

Karmakut manages this using Battlefield 2042Portal Mode. For those who haven’t tried it, Portal allows players to experience the classic maps before Battlefield Game. Players can also use the Portal system to edit many elements of the game. These include changing the maximum number of players, weapon stats, AI behavior, weapons, and spawning vehicles.

Karmakut created his military sim using the legacy El Alamein map. He limited the weapon and vehicle options to relatively modern American and Russian equipment, while reducing the overall number of vehicles. He also tweaks the weapon’s damage and disables the HUD entirely, forcing players to either aim down the line of sight or rely on the fire of the trail to hit their target. He then uploaded a video of the result to his YouTube channel.

As Karmakut will be the first to point out, it is not a completely accurate simulation. Soldiers and vehicles have an uncanny ability to survive long drops, and Battlefield 2042’s Healing is still pretty much a video game. One could also argue that tanks, planes, and similar vehicles should probably have face-to-face displays, since they rely heavily on real-life electronic targeting. Losing the HUD is also less user-friendly, as Tank Players have some difficulty targeting based on statements in game chat.

As Karmakut discovered, it doesn’t have to be a balanced experience. For example, he opted to enter the match using the game’s DM7 Marksman Rifle rifle and concluded that it and SVK might need to be nerfed. Shots with both rifles kill the target almost 100% of the time. While that may be realistic, it doesn’t quite do justice in multiplayer FPS. Karmakut specifically mentions thinking about the damage reduction of both rifles in the next mode tweak. Granted, it’s not like vanilla Battlefield 2042 always perfectly balanced one in two.

Are from Battlefield 2042’s The portal allows players to share custom matches, milsim fans can also try out Karmakut’s custom scenario for their own. Anyone who wants to try it out can find Karmakut’s custom server by searching for “KC MilSim Server” in the server browser. When Battlefield 2042 may not be the perfect game, Karmakut’s video shows that their Portal system has real potential for the future of franchising.

Battlefield 2042 available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
